Course Content: Similar to “Competent Inspector Level II” but more intense. Course includes hands on workshops where students must inspect various slings and rigging hardware, complete inspection forms and correctly identify defects and determine which equipment can be repaired and which must be replaced entirely.
Part 1. General:
- Inspection Types – Initial, frequent and periodic.
- Proof Testing – Review pull-testing requirements for wire rope, alloy chain, metal mesh, synthetic web and synthetic roundslings.
Part 2. Sling Inspection: Review the following sling types and their respective tagging and general inspection requirements. Includes a demonstration of periodic inspection requirements per the current ASME B.30.9 Standard.

- Wire Rope Slings
- Alloy Chain Slings
- Wire Mesh Slings
Part 3. Hardware Inspection: Review basic types of rigging hardware and their respective identification requirements and proper use. Includes a demonstration of periodic inspection requirements per the current ASME B.30.10 and B.30.26 Standards.

Part 4. Below the Hook Lifting Devices:
- Below-the-Hook Lifting Device Inspection – Review types, identification requirements, general requirements, correct use, and then review and demonstrate periodic inspection requirements.
Part 5. Written Evaluation: Multiple-choice, True & False questions. Also, teams inspect slings, hardware and below the hook lifting devices. Then they complete inspection forms to identify defects and determine correct dispositions including return for repair or removal from service.
